Tobias successfully completed his first triathlon after joining London Frontrunners earlier this year. He tells us how he got started in triathlon and how joining Frontrunners allowed him to learn from other people’s experiences.
I’ve always been into running and setting myself new challenges
When I started cycling to work more, I was interested in combining the activities.
What interested me most about triathlon is pushing yourself in three different disciplines.
I’m comfortable running in a competitive setting but it was exciting being a novice again and having to learn and develop new skills.
I thought joining a club would be the best way to get into triathlon
Joining a club meant I could learn from other people’s experiences.
After googling different clubs, I stumbled across London Frontrunners and felt it was the obvious choice.
It would be an opportunity to make new queer friends in London, which was important to me as I’m new to London, as well as getting into triathlon.
I’m extremely happy that I did join the Frontrunners.
Joining a new club can be intimidating but everyone was very friendly and made it easy for me to integrate into the club.
London Frontrunners have been incredibly welcoming
On my first training session with the Frontrunners, I was introduced to Alex, one of the coaches, who spoke to me about triathlon and getting started.
I could tell he was very passionate, and he was keen to share his experiences and encourage me to venture into the world of triathlon.
I found it hard to incorporate swimming into training as it’s not easy to get straight onto a bike or run when swimming in a leisure centre. But going to Splash & Dash with the club massively helped. It gave me a chance to experience open water swimming as well as combining different disciplines back-to-back.
Attending Slash & Dash really helped settle my nerves about completing my first triathlon.
I recently completed my first triathlon in Brighton
I absolutely loved it!
Although I hadn’t trained all three disciplines at once, Splash & Dash helped prepare me as I was able to swim the same distance as in the triathlon and run after completing another sport.
I did a lot better than I thought I would for my first triathlon, and I attribute that to both Splash & Dash and Wednesday night training sessions with London Frontrunners. I know I wouldn’t have been able to achieve the time I did without them.
I can’t wait for my next triathlon
I’m looking forward to building up to an Olympic distance triathlon and potentially venturing into the world of half and maybe even full ironmans.
Starting out doing a sprint or super sprint is a great way of getting into triathlon without having to push yourself to breaking point.
Everyone I’ve met through London Frontrunners so far have been very enthusiastic about triathlon and they love sharing their experiences.
Triathlon isn’t as scary as it might seem but massively rewarding and a lot more fun than I expected.
